The Hobbit™ Motorlodge is a 38 year old business still 100% owned and operated by the same kiwis from its inception date. The principal owner himself is a keen skier, tramper/hiker and traveller and wanted to provide a relaxing and hospitable place to stay in the Ruapehu region for skiers and travellers of all types.
The Turoa Skifield opened in 1978 and the town of Ohakune had little commercial accommodation to offer at that time. The Hobbit™ Motorlodge site was developed in 2 stages opening in 1983 with the 2 storey lodge, restaurant and bar, and 6 two bedroom motel units. In 1988 a further 8 studio motel units were added along with managers accommodation and office. The restaurant was shut after the 2006 ski season and converted into luxury motel units as it was no longer viable due to the large numbers of restaurants becoming established in the town.
Ohakune is on the edge of Tongariro National Park which offers much for adventure seekers like the Tongariro Crossing. The town has also expanded over time to become a significant destination for mountain bikers due the many bike trails on offer in the area. Plans are currently underway for further major trails such as from Turoa Skifield to Ohakune and trails from Ohakune to Raetihi.
